City Council.
The City of Castlegar is governed by a Mayor and six Councillors, elected at large for a four-year term under British Columbia’s Local Government Act. The current term runs 2023 to 2026, with the next general local election on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
Role of Council
What does Council do?
Council meets the first and third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Community Forum, #101 to 445 13th Avenue. Committee of the Whole meets the same days at 3:00 p.m. Meetings are open to the public in person and broadcast on Zoom. Council is responsible for the governance and well-being of the City, including:
- Set priorities and strategic direction for the City
- Establish policies and bylaws
- Make decisions on behalf of residents
- Set tax rates and approve annual budgets
- Determine the level and type of services provided
- Approve major capital projects and expenditures

Bring an issue, project, or proposal directly to Council. Apply at least one week in advance. Most delegations get up to 10 minutes to present and answer questions.
