Free, neighbourhood, weather-dependent. Bring your skates and a hot drink.
The City maintains outdoor skating rinks at Kinnaird Park, behind 2501 14th Avenue. They’re seasonal and weather-dependent. Best conditions come after a cold snap has frozen the surface hard and given crews a chance to clear and flood it.
If you’ve never skated outside under a Kootenay winter sky, the first time will sell you on the idea. Bring a thermos, bring kids, bring nothing but skates. It’s the kind of free that feels like a gift.
For indoor skating, the Castlegar & District Community Complex runs public skate, parent-and-tot sessions, and stick-and-puck through the season. The Complex is operated by the RDCK; check their current schedule and admission rates.
For natural ice on lakes and ponds in the area, use extreme caution. The City does not test or maintain ice on any natural body of water. If you’re not sure, stay off.
Heads up
Natural ice can fool you
