How the program actually works: a year-long outdoor exhibition, a People's Choice public vote, and one new permanent civic acquisition every year.
Sculpturewalk Castlegar is why the city calls itself the Sculpture Capital of Canada. Each year, new sculptures are installed along downtown streets, in Millennium Park, and along the Columbia River pathway, creating an ever-changing outdoor gallery that is free and accessible to anyone walking by.
Each year, a new collection of sculptures is selected through an open call for artists. Selected works are installed throughout the city for a one-year exhibition period. At the end of the year, a public vote determines which pieces are acquired for permanent display. Over the years, the program has built an impressive permanent collection that enhances Castlegar's public spaces.
Visitors and residents can enjoy a self-guided walking tour of current and permanent sculptures. Free walking maps are available at City Hall and the Castlegar Visitor Centre. Guided tours are offered from May through September for groups and individuals.
The Sculpturewalk program is part of Castlegar's broader commitment to public art and cultural enrichment. By integrating art into everyday spaces, the program fosters community pride, supports local and regional artists, and makes Castlegar a unique destination for cultural tourism.
