The annual open call for artists. What you get, what's expected, and where to send your proposal.
Each year, Sculpturewalk Castlegar issues an open call for artists. Selected works are installed across the downtown core for a full year, paired with an honorarium and installation support, and put in front of every resident and visitor who walks through the Sculpture Capital of Canada.
The call typically opens in September for the following year’s exhibition. Artists working in any sculptural medium are welcome to apply. Works must be built for outdoor display year-round, including snow, freeze-thaw cycles, summer sun, and the occasional curious bear. If your piece can survive a Kootenay winter outside, it will be at home here.
Honorarium
Selected artists receive a paid honorarium. Specific amounts are published with each year's call.
Installation
The City handles transport coordination, site prep, and physical installation of your piece.
Public Vote
A People's Choice vote runs through the year. The winning piece is purchased and joins the City's permanent collection.
Year-long exposure
Your work is seen by every resident, visitor, and tourist who walks downtown for an entire year.
Not every submission is selected, the cohort each year is small and the jury weighs site fit, durability, and balance across the collection. A pass is not a verdict on the work. Many artists are invited back in following years, and the program actively encourages re-submission.
Submissions are managed through the official Sculpturewalk website. Full guidelines, current honorarium, technical requirements, and the next deadline are posted there.
