Castlegar is a signatory to the West Kootenay 100% Renewable Energy Plan, a regional commitment with a 2050 target year. One of the headline regional targets in the Plan is replacing 1,430 gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2030 across the area.
Castlegar has public EV charging at the Castlegar & District Public Library (1005 3rd Street) and the Visitor Information Centre, installed through the Accelerate Kootenays initiative.
Castlegar adopted its Community Wildfire Protection Plan in 2020 and an updated Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan (2025) is now in place. Three Castlegar neighbourhoods have been recognized as FireSmart Neighbourhoods:

The City has funded three air-quality and cooling shelters for use during extreme heat events and wildfire-smoke periods. Real-time air quality is tracked through provincial monitors, and the City posts advisories through Voyent Alert during severe events.
